JOIN DEMOCRACY MATTERS! supporters from all across the nation for Juneteenth, a day to celebrate freedom, culture, and progress. Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in America and commemorates the collective freedom of African-Americans. Celebrated annually on June 19th, Juneteenth honors the date that 250,000 enslaved Texans learned that their freedom had been secured by the Emancipation Proclamation – two full years after it was signed.
Today, Juneteenth is a call to action for all of us across the country to come together, and honor and continue the work of those before us who fought for Black lives, Black voices, and Black votes. We will have the opportunity to envision a path forward, as we acknowledge the legacy of Juneteenth in Galveston, Texas!
This is the reason Democracy Matters! and When We All Vote are hosting our Juneteenth Weekend of Action from Friday-Monday, June 16-19, 2023. We are calling on you to participate by organizing voter education-registration-empowerment drives in your local community!
DEMOCRACY MATTERS! is counting on all of us to participate by registering our colleagues-neighbors, families-friends and communities to ensure that eligible voters check and update their voter registration status during the National Voter Registration Year of Action. We are calling on you to participate by registering your friends, family, and neighbors, and helping eligible voters check and update their voter registration.
Head over to a high traffic area in your community (laundromat, grocery store, barbershop, etc.) to register voters, make it a part of your family reunion or cookout with friends, or set up a voter registration table at a local Juneteenth celebration in your community. Whatever you’re doing – make registering voters a key part of it!
Saving our democracy has never been led by the people in power – it’s been led by each one of us, and it starts in our communities.
160 million Americans cast their ballots in 2020 – shattering voter turnout records and making history. And we can’t stop now. There is still work to be done before we head #BacktotheBallotBox!
