The Freedom to Vote Act Fact Sheet

The bill would protect our elections from interference, dark money, partisan gerrymandering, and voter suppression.

America is at a crossroads. We have reached an inflection point in which we must force our elected officials to act now or risk losing our republic.

On July 17, a year after John Lewis’ passing, the Transformative Justice Coalition, Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, Public Citizen, Declaration For American Democracy and many others to call for nationwide candlelight vigils – Good Trouble Vigils for Democracy – to demand the passage of the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, DC Statehood and to not let the Jim Crow filibuster stand in the way.

Our democracy is under attack. We are approaching the six-month anniversary of the failed January 6th attack on our nation, anti-voter laws are being passed in states all over the country, the U.S. Supreme Court issued rulings further undermine our freedom to vote and limiting states ability to require large donors to disclose their campaign contributions.

And this Summer, Congressional districts risk being redrawn in a way that will allow politicians to choose their voters – rather than the voters fairly choosing who represents them.

But there is hope for us to stop this undercurrent of corruption and rebuild American democracy so that the freedom to vote is protected, billionaires don’t control our political systems, and our representatives actually respond to we the people.
